Marad

Marad (in sumero Marda, la moderna Tell Wannat es-Sadum in Iraq) [1] era un'antica città sumerica. Marad era situata sulla riva ovest del ramo ovest dell'alto corso dell'Eufrate, a ovest della città odierna di Nippur, Iraq. Marad copre un'area di meno di 124 ettari (50 acri) ed aveva una popolazione stimata ad un massimo di 5,000 persone.
La ziggurat cittadina (E-igi-kalama [2]) era dedicata a Ninurta [3], il dio della tempesta, e fu costruita da uno dei figli di Naram-Sin, as well as the tutelary deity Lugalmarada (also Lugal-Amarda) [4]. The city fell into the bounds of the Akkadian empire after the conquest of Sargon of Akkad.
History
Marad was established ca. 2700 BC, during the Sumerian Early Dynastic II period.
