The Aetherius Society is an organization founded by George King in London in 1955 as the result of what King claimed were contacts with advanced extraterrestrial intelligences. Its guiding principle is service to humanity, through the manipulation of subtle energies, through prayer, healing and other, technology-based, means. Its teachings combine the spiritual teachings of yoga, with others received through the yogic mediumship of King in the channelling of advanced extraterrestrial beings. It has been described as a UFO religion.[1][2][3]

Founding

Aetherius Society's view

In 1954 George King, then in London, England, claimed he was contacted by an extraterrestrial intelligence who used the pseudonym Aetherius and claimed to represent a Cosmic and Solar Hierarchy referred to in this contact as "Interplanetary Parliament." He later described Aetherius as being one of the Cosmic Masters. The contact is described as having taken the form of a loud and apparently physical voice.

King maintained he was contacted a week later, while he was attempting to enter a state of deep meditation in order to discover the truth about this mysterious contact, by a well known, though unnamed, Indian yogi. King claimed that the yogi entered by walking straight through a locked door and proceeded to dispel any lingering doubts he harboured. King indicated that the being initiated him into a yogic exercise "the careful practice of which brings about an ability to travel from the physical body in such a way that full memories of all the experiences gained are retained by the traveller". He stated that a group of willing helpers would be brought into his orbit and that he would receive a letter from a school of yoga in London which he should attend for some months and diligently practise the exercises he learned there.

King said the letter arrived as predicted and he spent hours practising the exercises and pranayama and as a result was able to tune and telepathically receive the kind of extraterrestrial communications the Society calls "Cosmic Transmissions." These are said to come from an extraterrestrial intelligence code-named Aetherius as well as other advanced intelligences from within this solar system.

Prior to purportedly receiving the "Command", King had had a varied career. During the war he had served with distinction in the National Fire Service. He subsequently threw himself into the practice of yoga, which he studied diligently for many hours a day. He held a number of jobs, including being a professional driver (for which he had a passion).

Following his initiation he decided to put his former life behind him and claimed that he began to be used as a channel for "Transmissions" from the various communicators, often in public, in the Caxton Hall. Because of the sensitivity of the trance condition employed, King said that this condition was a very dangerous one.

He founded the Aetherius Society in London in August 1955 as a vehicle through which "Cosmic Transmissions" could be disseminated to the rest of humanity.

Beliefs

The society's beliefs are similar to Theosophy and the Ascended Master Teachings. Both share, in part at least, the occult traditions of both East and West. A major point of divergence from Theosophy and most other spiritual movements is that the Transmissions, which form the basis of the society's teachings, show a marked concern with the dangers of atomic experimentation and of humanity's inability to monitor all of its effects or to control it. The energy contained within the atom is seen as the fundamental energy of creation, and humanity's meddling with it as a perversion of a holy energy, and very dangerous indeed – more so than we realise, since all radioactivity is said to exist on at least seven octaves of manifestation, all of which affect us, but are not, for the most part measurable.Template:Or

Atomic energy was a recurring theme in many of the early Transmissions. The society claims that the atomic accident in the Urals in 1958 was reported in one of them. This Transmission was published in its journal, Cosmic Voice, at the time. Other than that, details of the accident remained secret until the publication of information in New Scientist in 1976, through an interview with the exiled Soviet scientist, Dr. Zhores Medvedev. The magazine, after reviewing evidence submitted to it by the society, subsequently admitted in print that it had been "Scooped by a UFO!"Template:Citation needed

The society also claims that approximately four hours before the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, King received from his extraterrestrial contacts advance warning of an imminent, major catastrophe.[4] It is a matter of record that the society activated its Spiritual Energy Radiators in order to radiate power to mitigate this disaster, four hours and 23 minutes before the event itself,Template:Citation needed and that this unprecedented period of such activity continued for three days. It was only after this activity ended that the catastrophe became public knowledge. Radioactive particles from the incident were detected on Swedish nuclear power workers on April 27, one day after the incident.[5]

Another major divergence from Theosophical and other spiritual teachings is the emphasis on the already mentioned extraterrestrial concerns, including life on other planets (including those within this Solar System), sightings of UFOs in the skies of Earth and the reason why extraterrestrial life should be concerning itself with this planet at this time.Template:Citation needed

Structure

The group's membership, although international in composition, is not very large, consisting of approximately 650 members as of 1993. There are three principal levels from "Subscription Member" (known in America as "Friends") to "Full Member." Full Members may also be admitted into the Society's Temple Order and become "Member-Initiates".

The Society has headquarters in Hollywood, California, which is the administration center for America and Australasia, and Fulham Road, London, England, which deals with affairs for the rest of the world. The Society has Branches around the world, as well as smaller official Groups (or Twelve Blessings Groups, which meet for the purpose of holding services together).

The various activities of the Society are run worldwide by three bodies: the Board of International Directors takes all executive decisions; the Synod is responsible for the religious aspects of the Society's work; and the Senior Engineering Officers are responsible for the Missions of the Society.

The group's tax exempt status was recognized by the US in 1960. This was three decades before the recognition of the Church of Scientology and a decade before Raëlism existed. In the UK the Society is an unincorporated association.

Aims and Objects

The Spiritual Aims and Objects of The Aetherius Society include:[6]

There are various Aims and Objects aimed at performing and promoting the various Missions of the Society, including Operation Prayer Power, Operation Sunbeam, Operation Starlight, and Operation Space Power.

Missions

The society is committed to service to humanity, through the radiation of spiritual energies. King believed that such energies could be manipulated using physical equipment, using the principles of shape power and radionics.

Following his initial contact in 1954, King designed many items of equipment for this purpose. Probably the best known of these is the Spiritual Energy Battery. Its precise design and composition are not in the public domain. Its purpose is to hold a charge of spiritual energy for an indefinite period. When connected to a Spiritual Energy Radiator (again designed by King), it can be discharged.[7][8]

The principle behind this modus operandi is simple, but significant: it takes a lot longer to charge the battery than it does to discharge it; consequently the spiritual power can be radiated in a stream that is much more concentrated, and hence more powerful, than it would otherwise be.

This is the basis of Operation Prayer Power, in which spiritual energy is directed to help in world situations of war, disaster, etc. As an example, 1,000 Prayer Hours (basically, a Prayer Hour is the amount of prayer energy which one person could invoke during one hour of concentrated and directed dynamic prayer) could be released from the Battery in 100 minutes or possibly less. The Society believes that this can be directed to anywhere on the planet. Effectively this is healing prayer energy on a global scale, that alleviates suffering and hardship in stricken areas. The Aetherius Society believes that Operation Prayer Power and other such "missions" have averted, and helped to bring relief to, many disasters.[7][8]

Criticism

Many skeptics think the society's ideas are peculiar and even more implausible than the beliefs of many other new religions. It follows what most scientists would deem an irrational belief in UFOs. Historically this has led them to encourage governments to release information they feel they are hiding on UFOs. Added to that the group claims to use physical equipment for the manipulation of spiritual energy. Finally the group claims that most of the planets in this solar system, and the Sun itself, are inhabited by life forms that are much more advanced than life on Earth.

Conservative Christians are at times offended by the society's view of Jesus. King's announcement that Jesus is living on Venus in the British press in the late 1950s caused the largest controversy in the Society's history. The group was accused of blasphemy or being in service to Communists. Most Christians would have found the idea offensive at that time, especially as King claimed to channel the voice of Jesus. Added to this, some of the Aetherians' statements on life on Mars or Venus are suspiciously like those found in C. S. Lewis's Out of the Silent Planet trilogy. For example, Jesus being on another planet and the beings on other worlds being invisible due to "living on higher vibratory planes" (Theosophists also believe that some beings on other planets, including Venus, are normally invisible because they dwell on the etheric planes of those planets, but they can appear to us if they so desire. Some Theosophists such as Benjamin Creme believe these beings travel in flying saucers which can oscillate between the etheric and physical planes.[9][10])

According to skeptic James Randi the titles George King later claimed are unverified.[11]

Le considerazioni di Pellegrino e Calabria

La Aetherius Society è una delle più evidenti diramazioni della Teosofia. Essa incorpora molti assunti e idee della Teosofia tradizionale ma include pure caratteristiche sconosciute ai tradizionali insegnamenti teosofici . L’elemento più discordante rispetto alla Teosofia è la trasformazione degli “Adepti” della Teosofia in intelligenze extraterrestri che la Aetherius Society ha denominato” Maestri Cosmici” o più recentemente “Dei dello Spazio”. Secondo tale religione ufologica questi esseri, che si spostano sui dischi volanti, hanno sorvegliato la Terra per secoli agendo come guide discrete e potenti nel corso dei tempi. L’unico leader di tale religione ufologica è George King il fondatore di Aetherius Society . King afferma di essere stato contattato nel 1958 dal più grande stratega cosmico “ Marte settore 6 “ il quale avrebbe definito King uno dei più rispettati geni mai apparsi sulla Terra . La maggior parte dei testi di tale religione ufologica contiene una descrizione particolareggiata del contatto iniziale tra il Maestro Cosmico e King . Dal punto di vista dello storico delle religioni questo racconto può essere considerato un vero e proprio mito di fondazione dell’organizzazione . Dobbiamo mettere in evidenza che King afferma di avere incontrato i più importanti Maestri Cosmici del nostro sistema solare, della nostra galassia e dell’ intero universo, ivi compreso il maestro Gesù Cristo che avrebbe trasmesso al Nuovo Profeta un nuovo Vangelo denominato “ Le Dodici Benedizioni “ . Una delle caratteristiche della Aeterius Society che più colpisce è l’idea che il gruppo ha della sua importanza, a livello mondiale . Secondo i documenti principali di tale religione ufologica, il destino del pianeta Terra e del genere umano dipende in gran parte dalle operazioni compiute da King e dai suoi adepti ,pertanto rappresenterebbe la più grande speranza di salvezza per il nostro pianeta. A detta di King sulla testa degli abitanti della Terra, incombono numerosi problemi e pericoli ,ivi compresa la stessa autodistruzione qualora il messaggio dei Maestri Cosmici non venga messo in pratica . Le azioni del relativamente esiguo gruppo di adepti di King rappresenterebbero la più grande speranza di salvezza per il nostro pianeta ( tipico esempio di soteriologia di carattere fantascientifico ). Qual’ è dunque in definitiva il compito dell’Aetherius Society ,che cosa farebbe di tanto importante ? In estrema sintesi King insieme con i suoi adepti, avrebbe il compito di compiere una serie di “operazioni” che hanno il duplice scopo di caricare la terra di energie spirituali, ed allontanare i pericoli che la minacciano, causati dalla malvagità degli uomini e da forze oscure che sono attirate da tale malvagità . I membri della Aetherius Society collaborano secondo le loro possibilità a tali “operazioni” e sono molto interessati ai loro risultati . Non è possibile un esame delle nerissime operazioni intraprese da King e dai suoi adepti, in quanto tale esame richiederebbe molti volumi che si leggerebbero con piacere come autentici romanzi di fantascienza e insieme come sintesi di molti temi dei nuovi movimenti magici . L’Aetherius Society è infatti caratterizzata da una visione magica del mondo e dell’ Universo attribuendo molta importanza ai riti magici di diverso tipo. Citiamo una sola operazione compiuta da King nel 1969 : con tale operazione denominata Star Light vennero caricate con energia spirituale diciotto montagne della Terra che potevano così fungere da accumulatori di energia spirituale . Secondo King nel 1964 la Terra ha ricevuto la sua iniziazione che ha notevolmente aumentato la sua carica spirituale preparandola ad accogliere l’età nuova ( King considera la Terra come un grandissimo essere vivente ). A detta di King la Terra ha ancora bisogno di ricevere energie spirituali anche come segno di rispetto e di adorazione da parte degli uomini . Secondo King i maggiori pericoli sono stati corsi dalla Terra dopo la sua iniziazione avvenuta nel 1964 a causa della reazione a tale evento, delle forze oscure . Nel 1965 un alieno ( un androide fabbricato dagli extraterrestri ostili ) è stato risvegliato nelle viscere della Terra dove dormiva da milioni di anni per impadronirsi del nostro pianeta : gli adepti dell’ A.S. sarebbero riusciti a sconfiggerlo relegandolo fuori dal sistema solare utilizzando l’aiuto di molti Maestri Cosmici . Nei principali documenti di tale religione ufologica si afferma che benché la maggior parte degli esseri umani non ne siano consapevoli le attività dell’ Aetherius Socoety hanno salvato la vita di milioni di persone e hanno evitato numerosi disastri naturali. Se esaminiamo la questione dal punto di vista psicologico appare evidente che le personalità di King e dei suoi seguaci sono caratterizzate dalla presenza di una forte megalomania e di uno sfrenato egocentrismo nonché di una incredibile esaltazione ,probabilmente una delle regioni psicosociali del successo di questa religione ufologica è la capacità di far sentire i propri adepti esseri fuori dal comune in quanto in grado di compiere imprese fantascientifiche . King è solito anche effettuare ordinazioni sacerdotali nelle quali vengono attribuite onorificenze ai suoi seguaci più fedeli . L’Aetherius Society non è un movimento religioso di massa ma è un gruppo stabile con una struttura e una gerarchia ben definite : a differenza di molti altri gruppi religiosi nati intorno alle rivelazioni dei contattisti . Tale religione ufologica si è dimostrata in grado di perdurare nel tempo e di acquistare una rilevanza internazionale . Il sociologo Roy Wallis autore di uno dei pochi studi scientifici su tale culto ufologico lo ha definito partendo dalla tipologia di Max Weber una “ Congregazione Mistagogica “e ha studiato la figura di King secondo il tipo weberiano del Mistagogo . Wallis ha dato alla parola Mistagogia un significato più ristretto e più specifico : secondo Wallis il Mistagogo offre dei mezzi di salvezza di tipo magico che sono sufficienti a salvare un individuo o un numeroso gruppo di individui. Nel caso specifico di King le operazioni compiute da lui e dai suoi adepti sarebbero finalizzate alla salvezza della Terra o addirittura dell’ intera galassia . Secondo King i singoli individui partecipando a tali operazioni possono migliorare il proprio Karma e di conseguenza aspirare ad occupare le successive reincarnazioni ,ruoli e posizioni migliori di quelli che occupano nell’ attuale vita . Molta importanza nell’ edificio dottrinale di tale religione ufologica riveste il cosiddetto Mito di Maldek il quale contiene parecchi elementi molti interessanti per gli storici delle religioni. . Alla base dell’ interpretazione che l’ Aetherius Society propone relativamente alle attuali condizioni dell’ Umanità c’è una lettura mitologica su come il pianeta Terra venne inizialmente abitato e su cosa avvenne nelle prime fasi della Storia del nostro pianeta . Il mito in questione parla dell’ esistenza di un altro pianeta nel nostro sistema solare . Tale pianeta denominato Maldek orbitava tra Marte e Giove centinaia di migliaia di anni fa ed era più o meno delle stesse dimensioni della Terra . Secondo King la civiltà su Maldek non aveva raggiunto un livello altissimo di progresso materiale e spirituale ma in ogni caso aveva raggiunto un livello sufficiente da permettere il soddisfacimento di un numero elevato di bisogni fatto che rendeva la vita piacevole sotto tutti i punti di vista . Il popolo di Maldek era in grado di viaggiare nello spazio ma non riuscì mai a causa delle limitazioni tecnologiche scientifiche a raggiungere pianeti lontani limitandosi ad effettuare brevi spedizioni nello spazio . Col passare del tempo il popolo di Maldek divenne sempre più egoista ed interessato solamente al proprio divertimento . Poi si manifestò una specie di “malattia mentale” : gli abitanti di Maldek svilupparono in maniera crescente un enorme brama di potere e tutto cominciò a volgere al peggio .Tutto finì quando essi fecero esplodere una bomba all’ idrogeno che distrusse completamente il pianeta e i suoi abitanti con la loro civiltà. Di Maldek rimarrebbero solamente detriti sparsi alla deriva nello spazio .King afferma che a causa delle leggi del Karma le anime di coloro che furono uccisi su Maldek avevano bisogno di un nuovo pianeta su cui incarnarsi .Per motivi diversi i popoli degli altri pianeti del sistema solare non erano in grado di accogliere il grandissimo numero di reincarnazioni provenienti da Maldek cosicché alla fine gli abitanti di Maldek finirono per reincarnarsi sulla Terra . Gli abitanti originari del nostro pianeta si trattennero sulla Terra per un certo periodo di tempo per aiutare gli abitanti di Maldek che gradualmente si erano incarnati sulla terra in modo da costituire una nuova razza ,infine, la razza originaria della Terra abbandonò il pianeta lasciandolo a quelli che oggi costituiscono la razza umana ovvero gli abitanti di Maldek reincarnatosi sul nostro pianeta . Tuttavia, essi che si erano reincarnati sulla Terra scatenarono una guerra terribile che distrusse Lemuria, la prima civiltà che si sviluppò sulla Terra . Tutti gli abitanti di Lemuria morirono in una catastrofe atomica e dopo migliaia di anni le anime della distrutta civiltà di Lemuria ,si reincarnarono sulla Terra e costituirono la seconda grande civiltà del nostro pianeta ossia Atlantide. Tuttavia, anche gli abitanti di Atlantide si abbandonarono ai peggiori vizi e per tale ragione scoppiò un altro conflitto atomico che causò la distruzione della civiltà Atlantidea ma questa volta le cose andarono in maniera diversa poiché gli abitanti di Marte intervennero e salvarono alcuni atlantidei che conservavano ancora un poco di saggezza . Il mito del Pianeta di Maldek può essere considerato dagli storici delle religioni un vero e proprio mito delle origini : esso presenta un comprensibile riferimento alla situazione attuale e provvede a dare una spiegazione sui motivi per i quali le cose non vanno come dovrebbero andare. Secondo King lo scopo dell’uomo deve essere quello di evitare il ripetersi dei cataclismi dei tempi antichi e questo fine può essere raggiunto solamente grazie alle operazioni dei membri dell’ Aetherius Society. Il mito di Maldek mette in evidenza anche un’ elaborata interpretazione del futuro . la struttura del mito presenta una concezione ciclica della storia ( il tempo del mito come sanno gli storici delle religioni è sempre un tempo ciclico reversibile ripetitivo).King utilizza tale mito per affermare che quello che molto tempo addietro sperimentarono gli abitanti di Maldek i Lemuriani e gli abitanti di Atlantide è in effetti la meta verso la quale si sta dirigendo l’ umanità attuale che sta compiendo gli stessi errori delle civiltà che l’ hanno preceduta . A detta di King solo l’ Aetherius Society può modificare il destino dell’ umanità presente . Concludiamo tale articolo mettendo in evidenza che anche messaggi come quello di King o di molti altri contattisti non offrono nessuna soluzione di tipo scientifico al mistero degli UFO aggiungono però alla fenomenologia ufologica una dimensione ideologica che si conforma alle esigenze emozionali di molte persone . Probabilmente è proprio questa una delle ragioni psicosociali del successo di alcune religioni ufologiche che riescono a trovare adepti anche a livello internazionale .Vogliamo evidenziare che quando King pubblicò il mito di Maldek nel 1963 esisteva un pericolo concreto che scoppiasse una guerra nucleare tra USA e URSS, cosicché molte persone si lasciarono coinvolgere dai racconti riguardanti le guerre nucleari scoppiate su Maldek Lemuria Atlantide dal momento che avevano paura che anche la nostra civiltà potesse essere distrutta da una guerra nucleare .
